Sophie Aston – Beneath Unfamiliar Skies 15 March – 12 April 2007
Sophie Aston's paintings for her exhibition at Amber Roome are a response to time spent in the Louvre,
Paris, studying the development of genre painting across Europe from the 17 century to the 19 century.
Elements from still-life vanitas, from equestrian portraiture and from the landscape sketch, appear,
stranded and bereft, on the surface of the contemporary canvas. Aston's paintings fail to provide a
comfortable view, a consistent perspective or a "denouement".
