The work investigates themes of surveillance, experimentation and violation, exposing the authority of fear and the vanity of the contemporary.

Karen Kirkwood’s mysterious and enigmatic paintings encapsulate the essence of the elemental. Her interest in cosmological geography and the expansion and contraction of the universe relates to the romantic notion of the ‘sublime’ in nature: beautiful and idyllic, yet simultaneously terrifying and powerful.

Sophie McKay Knight’s work is based on the notions of belief and superstition and their impact on everyday life. She is interested in the mystery and deception underlying the representation of supernatural elements. Her body of work The Little People is an exploration of the belief found in many cultures, that we share our world with an unseen majority.
