Gemma Louise Stephenson’s work concentrates on the sphere and its two-dimensional
counterpart the circle. It considers the relevant symbolism of the world, the heavens, the universe,
eternity, perfection and continuity.
The sphere, having no beginning or end, leads back into itself. Although linked with
many spiritual and religious beliefs the sphere, through scientific enquiry also becomes a symbol of
human life (atoms, the earth, planets and even the universe). Intrigued by the cycles of daily
routine, Stephenson’s cast acrylic objects and photographs explore the connections with movement,
space and time.
